Important large pair of Directory period candlesticks “Retour d’Egypte”
Rare large pair of Directory period French candlesticks “Retour d’Egypte”
Exceptional pair of gilt and patinated bronze French candlesticks “Retour d’Egypte”, dating from the Directory period (1795-1799). This magnificent pair of French candlesticks commands attention with its impressive size and impeccable craftsmanship, embodying elegance and excellence in every detail. They portray Egyptian female figures who wear a classical long dress and ancient Egyptian hairstyle while they stand on a circular raised base. On top of the heads of each of these Egyptian women rests a canopy with tassels supporting a richly decorated candle holder in a floral style. The base has several concentric rings with decorations of pearls and leaves.
These candlesticks are a rare and interesting testament of the “Retour d’Egypte” style which started to become popular during the French Directory period. In that period general Bonaparte embarked on the military campaign of Egypt. The fashion of this style, that resulted from the discovery of the old Egyptian culture, will extend over only a fairly short period. Consequently, this type of candlesticks is absolutely rare.
The mercury gilding on these candlesticks gleams with a luxurious radiance, casting an aura of opulence that captivates the eye, while the patinated bronze exudes an ageless charm, making them a true testament to craftsmanship and timeless beauty.
