Sublime pair of large early Empire period candlesticks

Refined pair of large French Empire period ormolu candlesticks

Pair of refined and richly decorated French Empire ormolu candlesticks which can be compared to similar models in the collection of the mobilier National in Paris. They are truly exceptional in their richness and variety of very finely chiseled decorative patterns. Also the original mercury gilding has been preserved remarkably well.

From a domed circular base with decorations of flowers and palm leaves,  arranged in several concentric annular sections, sprouts a conical barrel.  This barrel is decorated with a guilloche pattern, alternated with many bands of decorations in different patterns and alternating mat and shiny gilding. The barrel is crowned by a leaf-chiseled capital wit a chiseled leaf pattern ending in a bobèche with patterns of leaves and berries.

A masterwork of Parisian chiseled ormolu, these French candlesticks have been executed in an excellent quality chiseled and mercury gilded bronze with mat and shiny gilding. They are in an exceptional state of conservation.
