Wonderful pair of large gilt bronze French Empire cassolettes / candlesticks for double use. These urn shaped cassolettes rest on a fluted pedestal on top of a cylindrical shaft and a square base. They are covered with removable lids with openwork decoration and topped with a pine cone. One can easily change the cassolettes into a pair of luxurious candlesticks by simply turning the lids, hence the name “for double use”....
This stunning pair of cassolettes / candlesticks has many ornate decorations such as friezes of palmettes, interlace patterns and heart rays. These cassolettes are a perfect example of the taste and stylistic forms of the Empire when the imagination of the forms, the casting, the chiseling and the gilding had simultaneously reached a level of absolute perfection. This pair of cassolettes is in an excellent condition.
