Rare large pair of French 18th century Louis XVI period candlesticks

Pair of French 18th century Louis XVI period candlesticks

A distinguished pair of French 18th-century Louis XVI period candlesticks, crafted in finely chiselled and gilded bronze. Each candlestick is set upon a circular spreading base, adorned with cast acanthus leaves and bordered by a pearled ring and a ribbon-tied laurel wreath band. Rising gracefully from the base and its acanthus leaf motif is a fluted shaft, culminating at the top in an arrangement of acanthus leaves, garlands of hanging leaves, and tassels. Above this sits a pedestal supporting a fluted binet, embellished with four acanthus leaves and surmounted by a richly ornamented bobèche.

Comparable examples can be found in the collection of the Mobilier National in Paris.

These candlesticks exhibit exceptional craftsmanship, remarkable preservation, and splendid mercury gilding.
